La galería kurimanzutto se expande a Nueva York para extender sus objetivos artísticos más allá de la frontera norte, con México como centro… y no al revés.
“México es el centro y Nueva York se nutre de él. Creo que políticamente eso es interesante, porque en mayor medida funciona al revés: Nueva York siempre es el centro del mundo del arte y de ahí se irradia; para nosotros, México es el centro que se abre y se extiende hacia Nueva York”, enfatiza José Kuri en entrevista desde la Ciudad de Hierro.
En 1999, José Kuri y Mónica Manzutto fundaron la galería que fusiona sus apellidos, hoy considerada una de las más importantes del mundo. Sus orígenes fueron nómadas, pues comenzó sin instalaciones permanentes, pero después se asentó en la colonia San Miguel Chapultepec, donde alternará con la galería neoyorquina con un programa que complementa y dialoga con el que se presenta en México.
La muestra recién inaugurada en el 520 West 20th Street, titulada Todos juntos, evoca un principio de la galería desde sus orígenes: el entendimiento mutuo.

TODOS JUNTOS (All Together)
kurimanzutto anuncia la inauguración de TODOS JUNTOS (All Together), la primera exposición de la galería en el 520 West de 20th Street. La exposición inaugural incluye obras de 39 artistas. Como muchas decisiones importantes en la historia de la galería, la exposición (y el propio espacio) surgieron de varias conversaciones con sus artistas. Los mismos orígenes de kurimanzutto se encuentran en este tipo de intercambio: fue Gabriel Orozco quien concibió la galería junto a Mónica Manzutto y José Kuri a finales de 1990. La nueva sede de Chelsea se encontró con la ayuda de Adrián Villar Rojas, y muchos detalles de su distribución y de los espacios expositivos son el resultado directo de las aportaciones de Orozco y Rikrit Tiravinija. En todo el espacio se pueden encontrar elementos de diseño de los artistas: azulejos del Dr. Lakra, textiles de la obra de Danh Vo y una zona de recepción diseñada por Gabriel Sierra.
Damián Ortega contribuyó en gran medida a la creación de TODOS JUNTOS (All Together). Ortega, junto con Leonor Antunes, Tarek Atoui, Nairy Baghramian y Haegue Yang, por nombrar solo a algunos, imaginó una exposición que pudiera contar una historia visual del kurimanzutto y su comunidad. El título está tomado de una obra de 2014 de Tiravanija con el mismo nombre, que se expuso por primera vez en la galería de Ciudad de México. Con una nueva versión creada para la muestra, Tiravanija presenta un periódico intervenido con pintura del 12 de julio de 2022, fecha en la que se publicaron las fotografías más detalladas del Universo, tomadas por el telescopio James Webb. Para Tiravanija, la escala y la extensión de estas imágenes son, en última instancia, profundamente acogedoras.
La exposición se acompaña de una pequeña publicación en papel periódico que cuenta la historia de kurimanzutto, desde su primera exposición en 1999 en el mercado de Medellín, Economía de Mercado, pasando por nueve años de proyectos nómadas, hasta su espacio permanente en la Ciudad de México, y finalmente la apertura de la nueva sede en 20th Street. En esta exposición se incluyen esculturas de Orozco y Ortega, que provienen de aquella primera muestra en el mercado. El Mixiote de Orozco, una escultura blanda realizada con materiales procedentes del propio mercado y los Transformers de Ortega, un híbrido de juguetes robóticos de plástico y materiales orgánicos como caparazones de cangrejo o jengibre. Minerva Cuevas, que tendrá la primera exposición individual de la galería a principios del año que viene, presenta un carrito chocón que imprimió con el logotipo de British Petroleum para su exposición de 2002 en un parque de atracciones titulado DODGEM.
La muestra también incluye nuevas obras de Antunes, Atoui, Petrit Halilaj, Sofía Táboas, una pieza in-situ de de Haegue Yang llamada Sonic Droplets; Havana Syndrome, una obra sonora colaborativa de Wilfredo Prieto y Orozco, y un nuevo Blind Self-Portrait de Abraham Cruzvillegas. Cruzvillegas, que inaugurará una exposición individual en la galería en mayo de 2023, creó un arreglo de todas las invitaciones impresas de la historia de la galería y las cubrió con pintura negra, cálidamente titulada:

Una sala de proyecciones muestra películas de Fernando Ortega, Anri Sala, Apichatpong Weerasethakul y Akram Zaatari, y se instalaron en la exposición obras de video de Daniel Guzmán y Alexandra Bachzetsis. Además, el performance A Stray Man de Roman Ondak tendrá lugar en la inauguración y cada sábado.

Like so many important decisions in the gallery’s history, the exhibition, and the space itself, emerged from a series of conversations with its artists. kurimanzutto’s origins lie in such exchanges; it was Gabriel Orozco who first conceived of the gallery with Mónica Manzutto and José Kuri in the late 1990s. It was input from the artists that led to the decision to open in Chelsea and many details of the new location’s layout and exhibition spaces are the direct result of input from Orozco and Rikrit Tiravinija. Design elements by the artists can be found throughout the space: tiles by Dr. Lakra, lamps by Janette Laverrière, which Nairy Baghramian has installed in dialogue with her work in past exhibitions, textiles found in the work of Danh Vo, and a reception area designed by Gabriel Sierra.
The inaugural exhibition includes work by 39 artists. Among them, Damián Ortega greatly contributed to the inception of TODOS JUNTOS (All Together). Ortega, along with Leonor Antunes, Adrián Villar Rojas, Tarek Atoui, Nairy Baghramian, and Haegue Yang, to name only a few, imagined an exhibition that could tell a visual story of kurimanzutto and its community. The title is borrowed from a 2014 work by Tiravanija of the same name that was first shown at the gallery in Mexico City. Creating a new iteration for the show, Tiravanija presents a painted newspaper from July 12, 2022, when the most detailed photographs of the universe, taken by the James Webb telescope, were released. For Tiravanija, the scale and expanse of these images are ultimately profoundly inclusive.
The exhibition is accompanied by a small takeaway publication that tells the history of kurimanzutto, from its first exhibition in 1999 at the Medellín market, Economía de Mercado, through nine years of nomadic projects, to its permanent space in Mexico City, and finally the opening of the new location on 20th Street. Included in this exhibition from that first show in the market are sculptures by Orozco and Ortega. Orozco’s Mixiote, a soft sculpture made with materials coming from the market itself and Ortega’s Transformers, a hybrid of plastic robot toys and organic materials such as crab shells or ginger. Minerva Cuevas, who will have the gallery’s first solo exhibition early next year, presents a bumper car that she imprinted with the logo of British Petroleum for her 2002 exhibition at an amusement park titled DODGEM. David Medalla’s kinetic sculpture Sand Machine comes from a series by the artist associated with Signals, the groundbreaking London gallery founded by Medalla, Gustav Metzger, and Marcello Salvadori in 1964. kurimanzutto has previously mounted exhibitions dedicated to the gallery’s venerable program in both London and New York.
The show also features new works by Antunes, Atoui, Petrit Halilaj, Sofía Táboas, a site-specific piece by Haegue Yang, Sonic Droplets; Havana Syndrome, a collaborative sound work by Wilfredo Prieto and Orozco, and a new Blind Self-Portrait by Abraham Cruzvillegas. Cruzvillegas created an arrangement of every printed invitation from the history of the gallery and covered them in black paint. It is warmly entitled:

A screening room showcases films by Fernando Ortega, Anri Sala, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and Akram Zaatari, and video works by Daniel Guzmán and Alexandra Bachzetsis will be installed in the exhibit. Additionally, Roman Ondak’s performance A Stray Man will take place at the opening and on Saturdays.
