In 1997, This Photographer Captured David Bowie’s Historic Visit to Mexico City
Mexican David Bowie fans will never forget October 23, 1997. It was then that the Thin White Duke played his first and only show in Mexico City at the Foro Sol during the Earthling tour. It was a historic occasion for fans of the rock icon (and for Control Machete, who opened the show).
Something tells us Bowie never forgot his visit either. While in Mexico, he took a tour of some of the most famous cultural sites in the city, documenting the whole excursion in an article for Modern Painters magazine, according to Hello DF. In tow was celebrated jazz and rock concert photographer Fernando Aceves, who has snapped pretty much every big international event of the modern era in Mexico. Aceves documented the day and took some portraits of the once-Ziggy Stardust, allegedly selected by Bowie personally.
Bowie’s destinations were the Teotihuacán pyramids and the Bellas Artes and Frida Kahlo museums. He was interested in the murals that adorn the second floor of Bellas Artes, painted by Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. As seen in these photos, Bowie was in great spirits, even posing humorously in front of one of the murals. Aceves tweeted that when they visited the Kahlo museum, Bowie asked for a copy of the photo he took in front of a frog mosaic, since his wife Iman loves frogs.
